1 dollar in India during World War I

TWO RUPEES AND ANNAS EIGHT CURRENCY NOTE: A NUMISMATIC RARITY 
OBVERSE

This decimal issuance of currency notes of India proved among the current numismatic horizon that, this two rupees and eight annas note is oblately miraculous example. This denomination was used for conversion of dollar during world war one. Rs. 2/8 was equivalent to 1 dollar in 1918. Then Finance department of the Government of India in 1918 issued currency notes of the denomination Rs. 2/8. Thus, the notes were used during the need of paper money between 1 rupee and 5 rupees. It was withdrawn from the circulation in 1927.  Above in the illustration obverse and reverse of the currency note issued from Rangoon is shown. The prefixes represented the issuing circles. In this example R/5 represents the issuing circle: Rangoon. Manuscript Signature of MMS Gubbay, for Govt. of India. Coins of denomination Rs. 2/8 were also issued and are rare. It is no surprise to say it is one of the rarest currency note of India, and collected by major big collectors of Indian Paper Money in India and abroad.  Watermark: Star enclosed in a rectangle with wavy lines at the bottom margin running through. This prized collectable is shining in my collection. Provenance: From the collection of an IBNS dealer and used as plate note in the articles, Sold in 2012 to Nilaish ESQ.

Top Ten Rare Banknotes of India

By Nilaish "Paper money is fragile and when used a lot, loses it's life but collecting them is even a great challenge!"  It is known from various catalouges [1] and [2] that, Indian paper money originated in 19th Century from Bengal Presidency. Bank of Hindostan and Bank of Bengal were the earliest banks in the presidency who issued paper money. The earliest year of issue of Bank of Bengal is 1812. However, notes were issued since 1770 but there is no evidence to support these claims. Indian paper money is divided into roughly four periods, a) East India Company Period (1800-1860), b) British Government of India Issues (1861-1936), c) Reserve Bank of India British Issues (1937-1947) and d) Republic India RBI Issues (1949- ). The role of Perkins & Company in Indian Early Paper Money
